SITXFSA001-Use hygienic practices for food safety

UNIT OVERVIEW

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use personal hygiene practices to prevent contamination of food that might cause food-borne illnesses. It requires the ability to follow predetermined organisational procedures and to identify and control food hazards.

The unit applies to all organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises or smaller food preparation or bar areas.

Legislative Requirement

In Australia, it’s a legal requirement that anyone who handles, prepares or serves food as part of their job must be trained in food safety. This course  is designed to meet that legal requirement, as well as protecting customers and food businesses from the sometimes lethal consequences of food safety incidents.

Food handlers must comply with the requirements contained within the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.
In some States and Territories businesses are required to designate a food safety supervisor who is required to be certified as competent in this unit through a registered training organisation

Outcome

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

  • demonstrate use of safe food handling practices in food handling work functions in line with organisational hygiene procedures on at least three occasions

demonstrate procedures to:

  • identify food hazards
  • report unsafe practices
  • report incidents of food contamination.

Entry into this course

This is an introductory course for those just starting out in the
food industry, or for those who need to meet the minimum requirements for food safety training.
