This qualification reflects the role of a security officer, responsible for maintaining safety and security by patrolling, protecting and guarding property, and screening entry, monitoring behaviour and removing persons from premises.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements 
Occupational licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements may apply at the time of publication. This qualification does not provide the required competencies for a security officer license. Learners who hold a security license may select units as part of this qualification required for additional license endorsements in;

  • Batons and handcuffs
  • Canine
  • Cash-in-transit
  • Control room operations
  • Firearms.

Course Detail

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in
14 units of competency:

  •  8 Core units
  • 6 Elective units.

 The elective units must ensure the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome and are to be chosen as follows:

  • A minimum of 4 elective units must be chosen from the elective units listed.
  •  Up to 2 units may be chosen from the elective units listed, or elsewhere from the CPP Property Services Training Package or other current Training Packages.
  •  Electives selected from outside this qualification must be relevant to the occupational outcome.

Entry into this course

There are no formal entry requirements for Students seeking enrolment into this qualification, but Students must hold a current Security Officer license in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • The CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations is the minimum level for a Security Worker to be operational or “on the job” as required by the Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD).
  • Students seeking enrolment into this qualification must have an appropriate level of written and spoken English suitable for employment within the Private Security Industry.
  • These levels of written and spoken English are assessed by way of a Pre-Training Review process conducted during the enrolment process.

Target Clients

This qualification is suitable for individuals who wish to deepen and broaden their skills and knowledge in security operations and lead security teams in the field. It provides a pathway to further learning and work in various security roles and settings, including security risk management.

  • ​Students with related experience e.g. Police Force, Defence Force who wish to utilise their existing skills and knowledge in the Security Industry.
  • Students who have completed the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations.
  • Students with specific experience in the field of Security yet are required to update previous qualifications to ensure currency. (RPL may also be applicable for these Students).

How will I be assessed ​for this course?

Assessments are completed to measure your skills and knowledge against the training qualification requirements and those of the industry. 

The assessment process will include written and practical presentations, case studies, workbook activities, observation, project work and classroom participation and will require some time away from the training rooms completing assignments. 


To be eligible for the award of the CPP31318 Certificate III in Security Operations learners must successfully complete a total of 14 units.
Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised qualification will be awarded a certificate for:

  • CPP31318 Certificate II in Security Operations

A Statement of Attainment will be issued for any unit of competency deemed competent if the full qualification is not completed. Awards will be generated after successful completion of this course and full payment has been received.​

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

If recognition applies the students overall duration will alter and a schedule of exemptions will be provided.

Credit transfer

If a certificate or statement of results is produced and verified, a credit transfer process will be initiated by Baker Ebert in relation to the units as per the training plan.
